FASTag when buying or selling a used car in J&K

Agree who closes the old tag, keep the issuer’s acknowledgement and arrange a fresh FASTag before your first toll journey.

Make the old FASTag a separate handover task. Ask the seller to follow the issuing bank’s closure instructions, keep the acknowledgement and arrange a fresh tag under the buyer’s name using the chosen issuer’s requirements. Removing a sticker alone does not show that its account has been closed. Resolve an existing-tag problem with the issuer before relying on the car for a toll journey.

Ask about the tag before collection day

A used car may arrive with a FASTag still attached to its windscreen. Ask which bank issued it, whether closure has been requested and what confirmation the seller has received. Keep these questions separate from the RC-transfer application so the tag does not become a last-minute surprise.

Axis Bank’s guidance for second-hand cars says the seller should remove and destroy the existing FASTag and close its linked wallet; the buyer needs a fresh FASTag in their own name. Treat this as a useful issuer example and check the actual issuing bank’s current instructions.

Seller: close through the issuing bank

Use the bank’s official app, website or customer-support route to request closure. Ask what documents, account details and physical-tag actions it requires. Save the request reference, date and final confirmation. If a wallet holds other tags, ask the issuer exactly what needs closing for this sale before taking account-level action.

IDFC FIRST Bank, for example, provides tag closure through the Self-Service section of its FIRSTForward app. Its FAQ says a seller must request closure for the security deposit and balance to be transferred to the account details provided. This is an issuer-specific process, not a universal refund deadline or a promise that every balance is handled identically.

Buyer: arrange your own tag and check its details

Contact your chosen issuer about a fresh tag for the purchased car, its current document requirements and any existing tag still linked to the vehicle. Check the vehicle registration number, registered contact details and status in the issuer’s records before planning your first toll journey. Ask when the new tag can be used and how it should be fitted.

If issuance fails because an older tag remains linked, keep the error wording and ask the issuer for the resolution route and required proof of purchase or ownership. Ask the seller to cooperate with their issuing bank. Do not treat recharging the previous owner’s tag as the agreed ownership-change process.

Add a short FASTag handover record

Use a separate line for each task: old issuer; closure request reference and date; confirmation received; physical tag removed as instructed; refund action assigned to seller; new issuer; buyer’s tag status checked; unresolved issue and next contact.

For a collection in Jammu followed by a longer trip, complete this check before choosing the departure time. The same preparation helps when buying elsewhere and bringing the car back to J&K. This guide does not establish which plazas on your route charge tolls; check your route and payment arrangements separately.

Common questions

Can the seller move the same IDFC FIRST Bank tag to another car?

The bank’s FAQ says the old tag must be closed and a fresh tag issued for the other vehicle. Follow the issuer’s process rather than moving the sticker.

Does removing the sticker complete closure?

Keep the issuer’s account confirmation as well. Physical removal and an account-closure request are separate actions in Axis Bank’s selling guidance.
